The container that held the perfume was considered as valuable as the perfume itself. Through the ages, perfume containers and vessels have come in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes and differ from culture to culture. Famille rose (French: “rose family”) is the group of Chinese porcelain wares characterized by decoration painted in opaque overglaze pink enamel rose colors. These colors were known to the Chinese as yangcai (“foreign color”) because they were first introduced from Europe (around 1685). This very beautiful Famille Rose perfume bottle measures 1.75 inches in width by 1 inch in depth by 2.25 inches in height (4.44 cm by 2.54 cm by 5.71 cm). The painted design incorporates the traditional elegance of the pomander together with the bodhisattva symbolism of the peacock to create a shape and design of transcendent beauty. The bottom bears a Qianlong Nian Zhi period mark. Showing wear commensurate with a dating to the late 19th or early 20th Century, it is in very good condition. A superb collectors item, it would be a perfect compliment in any collection of Chinese ceramics or perfume bottles in general. It is guaranteed authentic.
