Chinese famille rose armorial plate, c. 1748, Qianlong (1736-95), with a central cartouche containing a European landscape, the border with two flower sprays and the arms of Steuart of Coltness (Or a blend gules surmounted by a fess chequy azure and argent and within a bordure of the third and fourth) and the crest (thistle and a sprig of rose tree crossing each other in saltire proper), with the motto’Juvant aspera probum’, diameter: 8 15/16in. 22.8cm; condition: two hairlines to rim, one with rivets, minor wear to enamels consistent with age, very tiny glaze crack to rim. According to David Sanctuary Howard this service was probably commissioned by Professor John Steuart of Edinburgh, a descendant of James Steuart b. 1608 a successful merchant and banker, and MP for the city of Edinburgh and Lord Provost in 1649 and 1659 and was later dismissed and imprisoned.
