Chinese famille rose caddy, Qianlong (1736-95,) decorated with two narrative scenes against a gilt foliate scrollwork ground interspersed by roundels and cartouches surmounted by ruyi containing landscape scenes en camieu, height: 4 3/8 in. Condition: starcrack to rim, lacking cover, wear to gilding and enamels consistent with age. The narrative scenes probably represent the Romance of the Western Chamber showing Yingying at home, and the amorous embrace of the heroes Yingying and Zhang Sheng (considered scandalous at the time) before their eventual marriage; to depict men carrying out intimate day-to-day activities with younger women are indicative of sexual advances, as W. For your consideration is an outstanding antique Chinese Tea Caddy. Fine white porcelain with enameled ornamentation, gilt accents. Very high quality hand painted Mandarin porcelain. Decorated throughout in a Famille Rose color palette. Domestic interior scenes in either medallion: two women and a child reaching for a vase at one side; two men, a kid and a rooster on the other. Birds and flowers cartouches, mountain landscapes and patterned backgrounds are separating both scenes. Extremely fine brush work, great attention to the detail.
