Chinese famille rose’commode’ bough-pot, Qianlong (1736-95), in the form of a mid-18th century bombe commode, the front decorated with two wide drawers and two short drawers, against a leiwen ground, the top with five holes with a portion of raised flower decoration and scrollwork, height: 4 15/16in. 12.5cm; width: 8 1/2in. 21.7cm condition: restored handle and six hair cracks neatly consolidated. Such bulb pots were filled with water, and the bulbs rested on the holes with their roots in the water for nourishment. The shape is modelled after European faience originals. Chinese famille rose Pronk’Arbor’ plate, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated in the centre with a topiary garden scene, the border with shaped-cartouches containing moths, butterflies, flowers and fruit against a geometric ground with shells, the reverse with iron-red and purple lambrequin border, diameter: 10.2in. (26cm); condition: usual slight wear to enamels. Jorg has identified the arbor scene as the Pronk’s fourth and last design (drawn in 1737) for the VOC.
