Chinese famille rose equestrian figure of Wang Zhaojun, Qianlong (1736-95), the lady playing a stringed instrument whilst riding side-saddle upon a piebald horse, all upon a rectangular base, height: 8 1.4in. 21cm; condition: break and small chips restored to a high standard. Provenance: from the collection of Lady Ottoline and Philip Morrell, and thence by descent. Lady Ottoline Violet Anne Morrell (16 June 1873 21 April 1938) was an English aristocrat and society hostess. Wang Zhaojun was one of the four beauties of ancient China. The story goes that Wang Zhaojun left her hometown to enter the harem of Emperor Yuan. Feeling sad during her journey whilst travelling on horseback she began to play sorrowful tunes on a stringed instrument. A flock of geese flying above heard the music and seeing the beautiful young woman riding the horse forgot to flap their wings and fell to the ground. Chinese famille rose jug and cover, Qianlong (1736-95) decorated with’long Elizas’ on a terrace and by a pavilion overlooking a river with flowering lotus, height: 7in. 18cm; condition: neatly sealed hairline to rim and small area to spout filled, minute chip to cover restored. For an illustrated example of a similar jug and cover see’Chine de Commande’ from the Royal Museum of Arts and History, Brussels p. The shape of this jug is derived from a European silver or faience model. The European influence on the jug can also be seen in the garland of flowers around the rim of the jug and cover. Chinese famille rose’ear-cleaning’ figure group, Qianlong (1736-95), of a lady with one knee raised revealing a bound foot examining the ear of a man seated on a rockwork base, height: 7 3/4in. 19.7cm; condition: restored. This figure group belongs to a series of’erotic’ figures which depict men carrying out intimate everyday activities with younger women, such as ear-cleaning and wine drinking, which W.
