Chinese famille rose’commode’ bough-pot, Qianlong (1736-95), in the form of a mid-18th century bombe commode, the front decorated with two wide drawers and two short drawers, against a leiwen ground, the top with five holes with a portion of raised flower decoration and scrollwork, height: 12.5cm. ; condition: restored handle and six hair cracks neatly consolidated. Such bulb pots were filled with water, and the bulbs rested on the holes with their roots in the water for nourishment. The shape is modelled after European faience originals. A similar pot can be seen in the MET Museum Collection; accession no.
