Pair of Chinese double peacock famille rose plates, Qianlong (1736-95), painted in bright enamels and gilt, the centre with a peacock and peahen perched on rockwork beside a large peony-blossom amongst various flowering branches, within a spear-head border to the cavetto, the wide rim with garlands of flowers enclosed by a geometric patterned border interspersed by cartouches containing scrolls. Chinese famille rose caddy, Qianlong (1736-95,) decorated with two narrative scenes against a gilt foliate scrollwork ground interspersed by roundels and cartouches surmounted by ruyi containing landscape scenes en camieu, height: 4 3/8 in. Condition: starcrack to rim, lacking cover, wear to gilding and enamels consistent with age. The narrative scenes probably represent the Romance of the Western Chamber showing Yingying at home, and the amorous embrace of the heroes Yingying and Zhang Sheng (considered scandalous at the time) before their eventual marriage; to depict men carrying out intimate day-to-day activities with younger women are indicative of sexual advances, as W.
