Pair of Chinese famille rose octagonal plates, Qianlong (1736-95), painted with a central scene of birds perching beneath flowering hibiscus and peony amongst ceramic vessels of ancient bronze form, the border with delicate garland of hibiscus flower and lotus. Diameter: 21.5cm 8 7/16in. Condition: one with 1 flake and 1 chip to rim, 2 flakes to underside of rim, the other with 1 flake and nibbling to the rimplate. Pair of Chinese Famille Rose’Judgement of Paris’ plates, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated in the centre with a scene from Greek mythology where Hermes brings the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite to Paris (the mortal son of King Priam of Troy) for their beauty to be judged, the rim with four cartouches depicting maritime scenes, diameter: 9 1/16 in. In this depiction, Athena has been replaced with Eros, the God of Love, and the plate shows the final stage where Paris is awarding the golden apple to Venus. Chinese famille rose’commode’ bough-pot, Qianlong (1736-95), in the form of a mid-18th century bombe commode, the front decorated with two wide drawers and two short drawers, against a leiwen ground, the top with five holes with a portion of raised flower decoration and scrollwork, height: 12.5cm. ; condition: restored handle and six hair cracks neatly consolidated. Such bulb pots were filled with water, and the bulbs rested on the holes with their roots in the water for nourishment. The shape is modelled after European faience originals. A similar pot can be seen in the MET Museum Collection; accession no.
