Pair of Chinese octagonal famille rose plates, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated to the centre with a leaf-shaped cartouche containing a scroll with gnarled branches, peony, prunus and a perching bird, against a red scroll ground with bamboo, peony and prunus to the rim, diameter: 21.8cm 8 5/8in. , condition: one with chip and fritting to rim, the other with fritting. Chinese famille rose caddy, Qianlong (1736-95,) decorated with two narrative scenes against a gilt foliate scrollwork ground interspersed by roundels and cartouches surmounted by ruyi containing landscape scenes en camieu, height: 4 3/8 in. Condition: starcrack to rim, lacking cover, wear to gilding and enamels consistent with age. The narrative scenes probably represent the Romance of the Western Chamber showing Yingying at home, and the amorous embrace of the heroes Yingying and Zhang Sheng (considered scandalous at the time) before their eventual marriage; to depict men carrying out intimate day-to-day activities with younger women are indicative of sexual advances, as W.
