The origin of porcelain pottery-making technology dates back 6000 years to the Neolithic period, and the related technologies and skills were continuously developed throughout early Chinese history. By the time the industry had matured during the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279), porcelain was an indispensable item for daily use in all sectors of society and was exported by land and sea. Famille rose (French: “rose family”) is the group of Chinese porcelain wares characterized by decoration painted in opaque overglaze pink enamel rose colors. These colors were known to the Chinese as yangcai (“foreign color”) because they were first introduced from Europe (around 1685). Famille rose porcelain was perfected at the famous Jingdezhen kilns under the directions of Nian Xiyao? Classic yangcai , typically decorated with figures depicting a pastoral landscape with auspicious bird and flower motifs.
