Fine Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Vase w/ Qianlong Nian Zhi Mark! This superb Chinese famille rose porcelain vase has a nice form with open gold gilt handles on the neck. It is decorated with colorful enamel painted designs on a background of pink and blue elbow designs against a gold gilt ground. It has a gilt highlighted Qianlong Nian Zhi seal mark on the base, however we feel it dates from the Republic Period. It measures approximately 9 + ½ inches tall by 4 + 3/8 inches across at its widest and is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. WE USE DAYLIGHT BULBS WHEN PHOTOGRAPHING. Famille-rose porcelain is also called Fencai or Ruancai (meaning’soft colors’), and later as Yangcai (meaning’foreign colors’), one of the Jingdezhen kiln of the four traditional porcelains, the treasures of Chinese traditional porcelain craft with pastel porcelain varieties as main decorative techniques. It is a kind of glaze (painted in the porcelain body) by low-temperature sintering method. It was introduced during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor, possibly around 1720. It used mainly pink or purple and remained popular throughout the 18th and the 19th centuries. By the time of the reign of Yongzheng in the Qing dynasty, these shades were favored over the translucent famille verte (five-colored ware) overglaze colors that were previously used. By the time the industry had matured during the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279), porcelain was an indispensable item for daily use in all sectors of society and was exported by land and sea. Famille rose (French: “rose family”) is the group of Chinese porcelain wares characterized by decoration painted in opaque overglaze pink enamel rose colors. These colors were known to the Chinese as yangcai (“foreign color”) because they were first introduced from Europe (around 1685). This store is where an old collector of Chinese paintings and porcelain offers for sale items that he finds interesting, beautiful and thought-provoking. This vase illustrates the Qing Dynasty experimentation with European opaque enamels (falangcai) which turned into the long line of Famille Rose porcelain. It has a famous smaller sibling: the. “Famille Rose Conjoined Vase with Panels of Birds and Flowers”. Which is in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei (it is easily found on the Internet, with photos, sizes and historical background). I did my best with the photographs but they are understandably not entirely faithful to the subtle elegance of this piece. This extraordinary vase is in excellent condition, which is amazing for a piece which could very well be a historical find. 25 cm Rim Diameter: 6.7 cm Each Diameter: 19.5 cm Height: 30 cm Total Width: 30 cm Note: The Taiwan Museum vase is 20cm high, so it is about 2/3 the size of this one. Both present two horizontal Qianlong reign marks in pale underglaze blue. The floral decoration is very similar, while somewhat more detailed in this vase, probably because it was allowed (and/or required) by the larger size. In the circular floral scrolls, blue is replaced by green in the leaves and the treatment of the flowers is slightly different. In the central panels, some details vary from one version to the other – for example, the beak of the magpie on the bottom branch is closed here, while it is open in the Museum version.
